That's me at Ray Loesche's Rainbow King Lodge, an exclusive
fly-in fishing lodge in Alaska. This shot was taken in spring
1979. Lake Iliamna is in the background.
I was working at the El Tovar Hotel at the Grand Canyon as
kitchen manager when I found out about this Alaska fishing lodge
opportunity from a waitress (Becky). I wrote to Ray Loesche and
his wife Earline and asked them for a job cooking for their lodge
in Illiamna, Alaska. My note included a request for jobs for
myself and a for a friend. Ray wrote back to say he thought that
was a great idea! So off we went to Alaska.
My friend and I quit our great jobs at the Grand Canyon, drove
my '53 Chevy PU to Oregon where we left it in a friend's barn
and then hitchiked from there to Anchorage. We took the ship
Columbia with the Alaska ferry system from Seattle to Haines,
sleeping on deck.
The hitchhiking trip to Anchorage was full of amazing days,
incredible events and very interesting people.
